16.04.2008 - Demolition threats 1
While threats to demolish illegal constructions in CRZ areas continue to haunt residents of Canacona town, residents of A. are now an anxious lot as their structures within 200 metres of High Tide Line (HTL) are likely to be razed.
Acting on strictures passed by the high court on CRZ infringement along the coastal belt, the A. Panchayat has issued show-cause notices to about 121 residents for constructing as many as 185 structures in violation of CRZ guidelines along the 2.5 km beach stretch.
The structures, which have been allegedly constructed within 200 metres of HTL at A. after February 19, 1991, are asked to show-cause why they should not be demolished for flouting CRZ rules. Owners of the structures have been asked to submit documentary proof of their structures within seven days.
According to Sarpanch Jovi F., the panchayat identified 185 illegal structures in a recent survey of encroachments within 200 metres of HTL.
The panchayat is, however, yet to take up the identification of encroachments between 200 metres and 500 metres of HTL, which is likely to bring more structures, especially residential units, under the CRZ scanner.
While many residents claim the increase in family members has led to more constructions along the belt, some fear that they would be thrown on the roads if the government failed to come to their rescue by taking a favorable view of the encroachments along the HTL.
